Thomas Tyres have been awarded Gold status from Bandag SA and were rated the best Bandag Dealer of 2004 in Southern Africa out of more that 40 other Bandag dealers. Reaching Gold status is by no means an easy task. Thomas Tyres placed a huge effort in achieving excellence in each of the four criteria set down by Bandag: Manufacturing, Services, Sales & Marketing and Finance.

The family concern became one of he largest Retreading units in Africa with hands on approach by family members.

The original manufacturing facility in Meyerton used the “Hot Curing System” for the Retreading of tyres. Both passenger and Truck Tyres were catered for in-house.

Some time later the company became one of the pioneers in the introduction of “Cold Process” or “Pre-Cured Retreading” as it is better known today, delivering better value to it’ s customers.

This process was adopted for Truck Tyres mainly, while passenger tyres were still done using the “Hot Process”, which cosmetically had a better appearance.

Due to the basic concept change of manufacturing the tread separately prior to applying it to the casing, to performance of the Retreaded Tyre was vastly improved. This was due to the fact that extreme pressures could be used to mould the tread giving it a higher density and delivering superior mileage.

The casing was also subjected to much less stress during Retreading which allowed for more Retreads per casing before scrapping.

The association with Bandag, the company who patented the above process came with a new set of rules. External Audits by trained Bandag staff on the products, procedures and equipment used during Retreading are strictly adhered to.

These Audits are performed regularly and ensure that the quality of Retreading is improved upon continuously. .

The use of premium quality repair material to repair injuries on casings, thereby returning them back into service is another area that no corners are cut in order to deliver value to trucking customers.

The introduction of “Non Destructive Inspection” by company was another way of delivering more value to trucking customers. This piece of equipment made it possible to detect flaws in the tyre where the naked eye could not see by using ultra-sonic sound analysing equipment.

The Company has continued upgrading to the latest model available on this Technology.

The introduction of Application Specific Tread Designs” was next. Customers now have access to products that have been designed to supply tread that has the latest rubber compounds and tread designs for their specific needs.

Long standing relationships with suppliers of casings in other countries around the world has given Thomas Tyre Centre the ability to supply Retreaded stock tyres to trucking customers as an alternative to buying new tyres.

The quality of these casings are superior to those available from the local market as conditions are less stressful than in the South African Market.

In Summary, the company is one of the largest users of Bandag rubber products in Africa and has stayed up to date on equipment that is available.
